Previously, conversations about mental health were avoided or brushed off. However, the importance of mental health has grown significantly and several idols have gone on breaks or hiatuses because of it. Idols have become more candid and honest about their mental health. They also understand that many suffer from similar, if not the same, mental health issues. Through interviews, podcasts, and live streams, they offer small snippets of advice to aid anyone going through a difficult time. No matter how small, many fans and non-fans alike greatly appreciate these idols for their uplifting words. Here are just some idols who have provided valuable mental health care tips.
1. Girls’ Generation’s TaeYeon
Many long time fans know that TaeYeon often speaks about her struggles with depression. She has mentioned this through both live broadcasts and interviews. In a YouTube video published by ELLE Korea, she talks about the importance of setting small goals and getting through them one by one. She states that once you reach these little goals, you will realize that you’ve accomplished everything that you’ve wanted to do.
2. KARD’s BM
BM has such a bright and joyful energy. He has the ability to lift up the mood instantly with his playful nature and infectious smile. He is known to be an advocate for many causes, including mental health. One piece of advice that he provides to cope with stress and anxiety is to confide in someone. BM says that it’s important to let someone know how you feel in order to receive the proper support. “Just in general looking for help. You gotta look for help”.
3. GOT7’s Jay B
The charismatic leader of GOT7 has been very open about his mental health struggles. In a ‘What’s In My Bag’ interview with ARENA Magazine, Jay B shares that he carries medicine for depression and panic disorder. He’s very transparent and encourages others to not be ashamed of their condition. Rather, Jay B says to seek professional help in times of hardship as soon as symptoms appear. Doing so early on will help you to lead a happy and healthy life.
4. Stray Kids’ Bang Chan
Bang Chan is an absolute gem in the K-Pop industry. He makes a constant effort to speak to STAY, usually through V-Live broadcasts. He’s very open and transparent in his conversations with fans, no matter the topic. Even early on in their career, Bang Chan offered words of comfort to those struggling with their mental health. He tells fans to come to him or Stray Kids as a whole. Regardless of the situation, they will remain as pillars of support and provide help to the best of their ability.
5. MONSTA X’s HyungWon
During a recording of MBC’s “Idol Radio”, HyungWon received a listener question asking for a recipe to become happy and explained their current situation. HyungWon revealed that he’s gone through something similar and recommended exercise as a way to better their mental health. Among the many different forms of exercise, the idol explains that it’s important to choose one to help you focus and cut out all the unnecessary thoughts from your mind.
